Meet Shelley

Richelle ‘Shelley’ Kay-Marriner is a decorated military officer, dedicated professional and accomplished scholar. After spending 30 years in the United States Navy where she ascended to the rank of Captain, she retired in 2018.

Prior to her retirement, Captain Kay-Marriner held numerous clinical and leadership assignments at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, Bethesda, MD; Naval Hospital, Okinawa, Japan; Navy Health Clinic, Quantico, VA; Medical College of VA, Richmond, VA; Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton, CA; and Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, VA. Her operational assignments Include: USNS COMFORT (T-AH 20), Operation Desert
Shield/Desert Storm and Senior Flight Nurse, Branch Health Clinic, Diego Garcia.

During her prestigious military career, Kay-Marriner received several military awards, including five Meritorious Service Medals; Joint Service Commendation Medal; Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal; Navy Marine Corps Achievement Medal; Combat Action Ribbon; Joint Meritorious Commendation Award; two Navy Unit Commendations; Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation; Battle “E” Ribbon; National Defense Service Medal; two SW Asia Service Medals; Sea Service Deployment Ribbon; three Navy and Marine Corps Overseas Service Ribbons; and two Kuwait Liberation Medals

A staunch believer in higher education as one of the keys to success, Kay-Marriner graduated from Niagara University, where she earned Bachelor of Science degrees in Nursing and Biology. She also earned a Master of Science degree in Nursing from the University of North Carolina.

Since retiring, Kay-Marriner is not resting on her laurels; instead, she boldly embraces her ‘second act,’ as a prolific and sought-after speaker. After climbing the career ladder in a male-dominated arena, and honing her leadership and interpersonal communication skills locally and globally, she has parlayed her experiences into a viable career as a motivational and leadership speaker. Kay-Marriner successfully integrates her military, leadership and business acumen, with her personal faith experiences into powerful, timeless and engaging presentations that are thought provoking and inspirational, and that resonate with a myriad of audiences.

A natural encourager, Kay-Marriner aptly weaves team building, leadership and critical thinking into impactful messages that engage audiences and stimulate dialogue, as she shares some of the principles of success, endurance, and determination that have served her well.
While she is proud of her military career, Kay-Marriner also views it as a launching pad for even greater successes. Already making her mark in the community, she currently serves on the board of the YWCA and is a member of LEAD, Hampton Roads-Class of 2018.

Kay-Marriner is married to Dr. Melvin Marriner, Senior Pastor of Grove Church, in Portsmouth, VA. She enjoys spending time with their four adult sons, Courtland, Isaiah, Joshua and Brandon, and their grandson, Maverick.
