Applicant Criteria:
- Must be current high school junior or senior
- Must be a resident of the cities of Norfolk, Portsmouth, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Suffolk or counties of Southampton, Isle of Wright, or Franklin
Essay Questions:
- Why is it important to understand the history and impact of racism?
- What can you do to stand against racism in your community?
Essay Guidelines:
Please utilize the following format and essay guidelines:
- 1 -2 page essay response
- Double spaced, 12 point font, Times New Roman
- Cover Page (Essay Title, Name, School Name, Grade, e-mail address, and phone number)
- Must be original work – (include bibliography if external sources used)
- Both essay questions must be addressed in entirety
Submission:
Students should submit completed essay response by May 31, 2022 to scholarship@ywca-shr.org.
Winner Notification & Award:
The wining student will be notified via e-mail or phone call by June 7, 2022. The scholarship award will be presented on June 15, 2022 at YWCA South Hampton Roads’ Inaugural Conference on R.E.S.T. – Racial Equity & Social Transformation held at Norfolk State University.
