Q: Where is the YWCA of South Hampton Roads located?

A: The YWCA's administrative office is located at 500 E. Plume Street, Ste. 700, Norfolk, VA 23510. The locations of the emergency shelters are confidential.

Q: Is the YWCA affiliated with the YMCA?

A: No. Although the YWCA and YMCA are both community based multi-service organizations, we are not affiliated.

Q: Are the YWCA's programs and services only for women?

A: No! The YWCA believes that in order to empower women, we must also support families and our surrounding community. All of our programs are available to men, including our services for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. Our emergency shelter is divided by gender.

Q: Is the emergency shelter located at the administrative office?

A: No. The emergency shelter is located at an undisclosed location for the safety and anonymity of the residents.

Q: Do you assist in paying electric bills?

A: No, but we can assist you in identifying other resources in the community that may be able to help.

Q: Tell me about the YWCA Out-of-School-Time program. How do I register my child(ren)?

A: The YWCA Out-of-School-Time program currently operates at four schools in the City of Norfolk. Our program operates from 7:00 a.m. until school opens, and from school closing until 6:00 p.m. There is an annual registration fee of $45 per child or $90 per family of three or more. This fee is due at registration, along with a current physical and immunization records. Fees are determined based on a sliding scale according to the family's annual household income. Proof of annual household income is verified by tax records or paystubs. Please speak to a member of our YWCA staff during program hours at your child's school for more information.

Q: What do the children do in the childcare program?

A: Our program structure is based on "interest centers" or age-appropriate activities. Interest centers include (but are not limited to) homework, arts and crafts, games and puzzles, drama, music, manipulatives, nature and hang time. There are six to eight centers available at a time, and the children are encouraged to explore different centers during the program.

Q: Is the childcare program licensed?

A: Yes. Each of our programs are licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia's Minimum Standards for Licensed Child Care Centers, as mandated by the Virginia Department of Social Services.

Q: Do you provide transportation?

A: Transportation is not provided at this time. Our programs are held at the respective school sites and parents are responsible for drop-off and pickup.

Q: Do you accept donations?

A: Yes. Donations to our organization are greatly appreciated. Gifts of financial resources can be mailed or you can donate online. Donations of unopened toiletries, food, new/unused linens, and clothing are accepted Monday through Friday, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., at our Administrative Office. Due to Health Department regulations, we are unable to accept used linens and certain used clothing items. All donations are tax deductible. A receipt is provided at the time of drop-off for in-kind donations, and acknowledgements are mailed for monetary gifts.
