CRISIS INTERVENTION

  • services to male, female, child, adolescent, and adult victims
  • 24-hour hotline staffed by trained counselors
  • 24-hour companion service to accompany victims to the hospital, police station, or court
  • office crisis intervention counseling for victims and loved ones
  • support groups for victims
  • emotional preparation for court
  • information and referrals to other services
  • follow-up contact

ADVOCACY

  • assistance with compensation claims
  • criminal justice system support
  • emergency shelter referrals
  • information about protective orders and the intake process
  • aid in securing rights, remedies, and services to other agencies
  • intervention with employers, schools, health care providers, and the military

IMPROVED VICTIM SERVICES

  • recruit, screen, and train volunteers to respond to sexual assault crisis
  • train police, medical, social service, and mental health professionals in the sensitive treatment of sexual assault victims

ANTI-STALKING

  • provide crisis intervention, support, and information to victims of stalking
  • train police and medical professionals to respond to stalking victims with information and referrals

PREVENTION

  • provide community education for sexual assault prevention
  • provide sexual abuse prevention programs for children and teens

 Sexual Assault Facts

  • 6 out of 10 rapes and sexual assaults occurred in the homes of victims, family members, or friends
  • 9 out of 10 rape and sexual assault victimizations involve a single offender with whom the victim had a prior relationship as a family member, intimate, or acquaintance
  • former husbands, boyfriends, and ex-boyfriends committed 26% of rapes and sexual assaults
  • overall, rape has the highest annual victim costs at $127 billion (excluding child sexual abuse) followed by assault at $93 billion and murder at $61 billion
  • one in six rape and sexual assault victims are under age 12
  • in 1994, there were 4,890 reported rapes of males over age 12
