Day of Commitment

Day of Commitment
to
Eliminate Racism
|
Racism ...it really hurts.
The YWCA of South Hampton Roads is dedicated to eliminating
racism in our community and promoting appreciation and dialogue
between the races. April 30 was the National YWCA Day of Commitment
to Eliminate Racism. To commemorate the event, the YWCA of SHR
produced an elementary school rally to celebrate diversity and
symbolize unity among the races. The rally was hosted at 2:00
p.m. at Mary Calcott Elementary school in Norfolk. All 627 students
marched out to the field waving colorful ribbons symbolizing
the diversity among them. Principal Pete Sykes made opening remarks
referring to the students as a "beautiful rainbow of colors".
Delegate Jerrauld C. Jones, this year's recipient of the YWCA's
Mary Helen Thomas award, made a brief speech on racial harmony.
The event culminated with students and faculty singing "Colors
All Our Own" while accompanied by Michael Goldberg and Eric
Worden in conjunction with the Magic99 program.
The event was taped by WHRO as part of it's "Colors All
Our Own" outreach and footage was aired on the May 18 broadcast
of "School Talk" with Angie Callahan. On May
1, 1999 The Virginian-Pilot published an article entitled
"Student's Defy Racism" on the first page of the Hampton
Roads section.
In light of recent coverage of violence in the media, the
YWCA of SHR is proud to be projecting a positive image for our
young people. This event was truly a community collaboration
that fostered an attitude of unity and appreciation of other
racial, cultural and ethnic groups. If we all remain committed
to teaching our young people to establish harmonious relationships,
it will create a better world for us all.
We would like to acknowledge and thank the following people
for their contributions to the event: Del. Jerrauld C. Jones,
WHRO, Angie Callahan, Margaret Padilla, Michael Goldberg, Eric
Worden, Principal Pete Sykes, Kevin Rae, Pam Hyatt, Jennifer
Grissom, Mr. Smallwood, Carol Branch, Virginia Power, Lester
Pauls, Dave Whitton and 627 very special students! Special recognition
goes to the young artists whose work was featured on the event
banner; Ashley Maddox, Jeffrey Foster, Mindy Emerick & Michele
Horton.
The YWCA of SHR site was
jointly developed by Samantha Boucek, Kimberlee Sellers, and
Cynthia Forrester.
